I recently received a copy of, Underwater Odyssey – Sick & Injured Marine Animals Tell Their Stories by Krista Dunlop. This book certainly fell into the right hands, my family and I are huge lover’s of all creatures large and small, land or sea and it breaks our hearts to see any living thing stressed or not thriving. No, we don’t kill spiders, we don’t fish or hunt and we even shoo flies out the door.
This small, child friendly book is in a colouring book format and includes beautiful photographs as well as information on the:
- Manatee
- Bottlenose Dolphin
- Whaleshark
- Green Sea Turtle
There is a short description of each of these marine animals and a child friendly synopsis. This brief summary explains to the why you shouldn’t feed them, why you don’t throw trash in waterways and how the child, as a Blue Planet Legacy Hero can help each of these creatures by such things as:
- Sharing what they have learned
- Remembering not to release balloons or throw trash into the ocean
- Participating in a beach clean up
- Doing a class presentation
- Adopting one of these animals through the Blue Planet legacy program

I learned on the blog that Krista Dunlop is the author of Underwater Odyssey’s first environmental awareness educational activity book for children entitled: “Sick & Injured Marine Animals Tell Their Stories.”
After visiting Project AWARE – I read their Issues and Projects section and came across the article on “Sharks in Peril.” I found that they have a link to sign the AWARE petition to save sharks.
I learned that the The United Nations has launched a new “Oceans Compact” to combat pollution, over-fishing and rising sea levels on August 12, 2012. The new initiative is to protect the oceans and the people whose livelihoods depend on it, and calls on countries to work together to achieve a more sustainable management of this precious resource and address the threats it is currently facing.
