Use Your Words – A Writing Guide For Mothers by Kate Hopper introduces mothers to the craft of writing. That special moment, the one you know you will never forget, will someday be a fond but very distant memory. Time will have successfully ravished the edges and blurred it with other moments and memories, never again to be clearly captured.
Photographs effectively portray an image or a moment frozen in time. What they do not do is capture the intense, absolute heart exploding joy of having your child sleepily nuzzle your neck and softly murmur, “I love you”. These are the moments Ms. Hopper will allow you to effectively describe and scribe to be read and re-read.
“She will teach you to use motherhood as a lens through which to write the world, and turn your motherhood stories into art.” (Amazon)
Many other writing guides for mothers focus on journaling or how to fit writing into a busy life, Use Your Words, is a writing workshop. Each chapter contains a lecture, a published essay by a contributing writer, and exercises that will serve as jumping off points for the readers’ own writing.
Chapters include such topics as:
- Creative Nonfiction and Motherhood
- Our Children as Characters: Character Development
- Using Humour as a Tool
- Writing the Hard Stuff
- Structure: How to Put it Together
- Publishing: From Blogs to Books
The content of each lecture is aligned with the essay or poem in that chapter to help readers more easily grasp the elements being discussed and ultimately the art of creative nonfiction.
Forget rattles, sweater sets and blankets, this book is the perfect gift for all the new and expectant mothers in your life!
