How Did the Deer Guard Recipe Work? {Photos – One month later}

A few weeks ago I posted a recipe for a concoction called Deer Guard.  It is sprayed on your flowers and the theory is the deer don't like the taste/smell of it and won't eat your plants. How did it work?  See for yourself... … [Read more...]

Deer Guard ~ Do The Deer Think of Your Planters as a Salad Bowl?

Deer Guard ~ Until a couple of days ago, we had some pretty lush looking planters on either side of the garage door...notice my use of the word "had".  The poor deer have come to think of our planters and flower gardens as one big salad bowl.  I don't blame them, massive subdivisions have sprouted up overnight and the deer have nowhere to go. … [Read more...]

Veggie Burger ~ {Recipe}

Veggie Burger ~ I am not technically a vegetarian, I really don't eat much beef or pork at all, but I do eat fish, poultry and the odd piece of bacon. The rest of my family loves a nicely barbecued burger, but, they are definitely not my thing! I always felt a bit "left out" when I just had salad or whatever other side dish we happened to be having.  So, I decided to do a bit of research and came up with this recipe. … [Read more...]

A little taste of Spring ~ Rhubarb Muffins ~ {Recipe}

My sister recently brought me some rhubarb freshly picked from her garden.  It looked and smelled so much like spring!  I cut off the leaves, washed it, wrapped it in some damp paper towel and put it in the fridge. As many of you know by now I LOVE making muffins! Yesterday, I decided to make some muffins with the rhubarb...I adapted a blueberry muffin recipe I had and they turned out really well.  Light and sweet with just a little tang from the rhubarb. Do you love muffins?  What are … [Read more...]

Yummy Christmas Recipe ~ Peanut Butter Balls ~

There are many, many variations on this recipe and you can certainly add a few finely cut up cherries or nuts, or a 1/2 cup rice krispies; but this is how we (I should say my daughter as she's been making them the last few years!) always make them. Peanut Butter Balls 2 cups icing sugar 1 cup peanut butter 4 Tbsp. milk 2 tsp. vanilla 1 cup finely shredded coconut Mix above ingredients together well, you really need to work the dough to get it to the correct consistency. … [Read more...]

No Fail Pie Crust

Lately, I haven't been making as many pies as I once did.  Probably related to two things, first, I'm certainly more health conscious than I was 20 years ago.  And,  lets face it, with a cup of shortening/butter/lard in one double crust pie, it doesn't matter if the filling is all carrots, quinoa and celery, it could never be considered a health food.  However, sometimes healthy just isn't the priority...comfy and homey is, and a pie certainly fits that criteria.  Secondly, now that I'm a … [Read more...]

Banana Chip Muffins….these are so delicious! {Recipe}

Today I had some bananas that were getting over ripe.  Usually I make banana bread or peel the bananas and freeze them for future banana breads.  I love banana bread...but, quite frankly, today the thought of another one just held no appeal.. So, I headed off to look through my trusty cookbooks.   Several hours later I emerged from a pile of cookbooks, recipe cards and magazines and asked myself...what was I looking for??  Oh yes, something to do with the dreaded, rotting bananas.  So, … [Read more...]
