Many of us celebrate Mother’s Day by showing their appreciation for mothers or mother figures. The Mother’s Day date in Canada and the US is on the second Sunday of May each year.
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood occur throughout the world and many of these can be traced back to ancient festivals. However, did you know, the modern holiday is a US invention and it is not related to these celebrations?
In 1908, a women by the name of Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. She then began a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the US. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s
I never knew carnations were a popular Mother’s Day symbol in both Canada and the United States? Did you?
My daughter said she was going to make dinner for me, so I plan to spend a very quiet day, maybe do a little gardening, a little reading and having a nice glass of wine before dinner…sounds like a perfect day! What are your plans for Mother’s Day?
Wishing all my fellow “moms” a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing Mother’s Day!
Happy Mother’s Day back!
Thanks Debi, hope you have a wonderful day too!
I plan on catching up on some work and also packing since we are moving on the 25th and in between that I plan on making dinner for myself and my sister and waiting on her and my son to come home who I miss a lot right now. The main thing I am going to do though is try and stay busy to keep my mind off my daughter who I am missing like crazy as she was killed in 2004 and I wish I could see her one more time.
Glenda I am so sorry for your loss and my heart is breaking for you. I cannot begin to imagine how difficult this and many, many other days must be for you and your family. Staying busy is a good strategy to help in coping and I hope your son and sister are soon there to help you with this difficult time.
My thoughts are with you,
Monica
Thanks Monica and I wish you a Happy Mothers Day Please enoy it with your Family and Hug your familye xtra tight for me.
I too, plan a quiet day, with a little reading, a little gardening and a glass of wine before dinner with ‘the girls’. I’ve already been out taking a few early morning photos of the May flowers.
To Glenda – Please know that you’re being thought of on this day!!
Dinner with your girls will be fun, Happy Mother’s Day!
Monica, what a lovely tribute to Mothers. I,too, plan on a relaxing day. I expect the “kids” will be in this afternoon along with grandchildren so am looking forward to that. The first words my hubbie said to me this am, before my eyes were even open were “Happy Mother’s Day,dear”. That in itself is a nice gift to me!!
Patricia, Sugar & Spice & All Things ? Nice
Sounds like a great way to spend the day! Happy Mother’s Day!
Hey Pat,
Bob had to go to Canadian Tire for a new mower blade, and made a detour to NBL. That was his Mother’s day gift to me. I’m not complaining! he,he
