I was recently given the opportunity to review My Baby Compass -Birth to Two Years, by Kathryn Thorson Gruhn. While my children are now grown and long removed from this age group, as a nurse and a mom, I realize the importance of closely monitoring child development. I have been hearing many great things about the My Baby Compass series and I’m thrilled to be featuring a review & giveaway.
The program I received covers the areas of development including: Getting to Know Your Baby, The Communication Process, “Tracking Your Child’s Progress, My Child Did Not Meet a Milestone. Now What?” and an Appendix that tells you how to get help with resources that will give you support.
The manual covers topics such as:
- feeding
- routines
- how babies learn
- developing speech sounds
- understanding baby’s cries
- vocabulary development
- appropriate toys & activities
- nursery rhymes
- finger plays
- music selections
- recommended web sites
- using sign language (144 sign illustrations)
- parenting resources

20% of children experience a developmental delay or disorder. Early Intervention is the key to success.
I really like that there are sets for kids up to age 7 because I do wonder about my preschooler
The program thoroughly covers identification of skills and activities in the areas of: speech (talks), hearing (hears), physical (moves), cognitive (understands),social/emotional (feels) and vision (contains skills only).
I learned that early intervention is the key to success.
I learnt that Kathy worked for the United Cerebral Palsy in an inclusionary preschool program. Kathy found that parents of typical children had more questions than those of special needs, because they didn’t know how to determine if there child was on target or how to enhance their child’s learning.
I like that they donate money to Austism Speaks…the books also seem really easy to use and keep up with.
I learned they are easy to read!
