“Love You Forever” *sniff* *sniff* *sniff*

I was just on Facebook and saw that someone had posted a picture of this book…

…and the memories came flooding back.  When my son was little, every time I was in our local mall and passed by “Coles” bookstore {It was the pre Indigo and Chapter’s era} I would drop in to have a look at the magazines and maybe pick up a best seller.

Invariably, like an unseen magnet, I would be drawn to the children’s section and without fail I would pick up this book, start reading and begin quietly sobbing.   What was wrong with me??  Why did I subject myself to this embarrassment on a regular basis??  Why didn’t I just… BUY THE BOOK…and be done with it?

I don’t know why, maybe because I was always making such an idiot of myself and as soon as I finished reading it,  I needed to make a hasty exit?  Whatever the reason, lord knows what a psychiatrist would say…but for years I never bought the book.

Finally, the day arrived…I walked  bravely misty eyed into the bookstore, headed to the back, where I knew the book was located, picked it up and walked to the cash.  It was my son’s high school graduation and I knew the time had come for me to let go, if only just a little.

“…the son walked over to the mommy, he picked her up and rocked her, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, and he would sing…I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my mommy you’ll be…”  (Robert Munsch)

*sniff*…*sniff*…*sniff*….is it just me or does this book turn anyone else into a blubbering idiot?

  1. AHHH not this book! We own it (as it was given to us as a gift when my son was born) and it is SUCH a tear jerker!! I remember reading it when I was younger and never bought it myself, but when I reread it after getting it as a gift, was teary-eyed all over again. A great book, but definitely an emotional read lol.

  2. lol yes!!! I owned this book before I had kids because I worked in child care, I always thought it was sweet, but now as a mom I can’t even get through it without crying and then the kids wonder why I am crying and well, I can’t even read it to them anymore! lol

  3. Oh this book………This book ALWAYS has me in tears. I’ve read this to both my children and would get emotional EVERY TIME! It’s not silly. This is a great book. I now only read it every once in a while and on days when both kiddies are sick.

  4. I am crying just thinking about that book. Classic!

  5. Jeannette Laframboise says:

I am so HAPPY to hear that I am not the only one…My boys are now 28, 25 and 12. I actually have 3 copies of this book with one being a collector’s edition that I came upon one day and couldn’t pass up. I read, well, sort of read ‘Love You Forever’ to my children more times than I could ever count. I have NEVER and I mean never read beyond half way before I was blubbering into a tissue. Goodness knows I tried so many times to hold it together but failed miserably…My boys could never figure me out when they were little and they specifically asked me to read it so they could see my reaction…they remember it vividly too. It even becomes the topic of family parties and such with my boys chatting away-“Remember Mom used to cry her eyes out over that book?” Now, they are older and I occasionally pull that book out and you know what happens? I sit, with it open in my lap as I reach for the tissue box. Robert Munsch sure knows how to touch a mother’s heart. ;-)

    • He sure does Jeannette, I recently read somewhere that he has sold over 50,000,000 copies of this book…can you imagine all those crying mothers :)

we have this on CD……my oldest really likes it

  7. Manager to Mom says:

YES! We own the book but neither my hubby nor I can read it to our daughter without blubbering. My mom and I watched the YouTube vid (narrated by the author himself) and we both started crying from that too! Munsch has definitely managed to create The Perfect Tearjerker.

  8. Elizabeth L says:

My aunt bought this book for my daughter and honestly I cannot read it to her without crying.

  9. Brenda Penton says:

This book always finds me when I go through my son’s books. I can’t get through it without bawling my eyes out.

  10. My most absolute favourite Robert Munsch story! I received it as a shower gift before my first DD was born. It gets me every time! :) We even sing part of it (I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always…..) throughout the book. DD is now 6 and she’ll still pull this book out to hear it and I think to see Mama cry.

    • Listen Nancy, you stop that singing…I’m tearing up again!! This book certainly grabs at my and many other hearts!

  11. I still cannot read this book the whole way through without getting all choked up and bawling my eyes out. My son got a copy for his baby shower and someone tried to read it aloud. He is now 18, but the book remains on his bookshelf. I don’t know if he reads it, but I have seen him glance through it.
