My Journey as a Combat Medic by Patrick Thibeault {Review}

My Journey as a Combat Medic

In My Journey as a Combat Medic, Patrick Thibeault takes us with him and shares with us the stories of his time as a medic in Desert Storm and Afghanistan.

“My Journey as a Combat Medic is the true story of one medic who served in several different wars. The author served in the active Army and the Army National Guard, during training missions overseas and also during combat operations. It is the story of one who started out as a wet-behind-the-ears, naïve medic and evolved into a well-seasoned, hardened combat veteran.  This book is not about tactics of war, nor does it glorify the horrors of war. Quite the opposite: it is a celebration of life and humanity, as the combat medic is one of a few people who brings compassion and humanity to the field of battle.” *

In this informative, easy to read, journal like memoir we hear a first hand account of what it really means to be a battlefield medic.  We read this insightful and candid account of his daily life as an army medic and we very quickly come to recognize this man’s courage, compassion, immense knowledge and humanitarianism.

As a former Operating Room nurse, I must admit to being more than a little intrigued at the prospect of reviewing, My Journey as a Combat Medic, and I wasn’t disappointed.  Even though our settings and experiences are very different he made me actually feel the adrenaline rush and the heightened awareness that comes with dealing with emergency situations.  As I read this book it was very easy to see Thibeault’s deep commitment to professionalism and the well being and health of others.

    Excellent review! I, too, enjoyed this book from the perspective of a nurse of many years. Others, however, will have no difficulty finding an emotion to relate to.
