The first time I had these deliciously decadent, Chocolate Mousse Squares was several years ago. A fellow nurse and I were working the week-end shift in the Operating Room and she brought in a pan of these squares as a little dinnertime treat!
It was love at first bite! These squares are a silky, smooth, creamy delight; once you have one, you will definitely be hooked.
They make the perfect dessert for both a casual family barbecue or an elegant dinner party! They are super easy to make and the best part, you can make them days ahead and just store them in your freezer. (To avoid encountering the “empty pan phenomenon”, I suggest storing these squares under tight security!!)
PS… I need to confess to actually eating a square, still frozen, directly from the pan.
I hope you enjoy this recipe and as always, if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to ask.
- 1¼ cup dark chocolate cookie crumbs
- ¼ cup butter, melted
- 5 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted (melt according to package directions)
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tubs plain, spreadable style cream cheese
- 2 cups cool Whip. thawed
- Line a 9 inch square pan with two alternating 9 inch strips of parchment paper. (Leave an overlap on all sides to facilitate easy removal of squares from the pan)
- Mix cookie crumbs and melted butter together; press into bottom of the pan.
- Using an electric mixer, beat cheese until smooth and creamy.
- Beat in milk, then melted chocolate and finally, Cool Whip until well combined.
- Pour over prepared crust.
- If desired, top with a sprinkling of additional cookie crumbs.
- Freeze for a minimum of 4-6 hours.
- Remove dessert from freezer 15 minutes prior to serving.
- To serve, using parchment, lift squares from pan to a cutting board and slice.
Those look sooooooo good. I’m dying for chocolate too. I’ve been eating chocolate chips right out of the bag.
JoJo, there is nothing wrong with eating chocolate chips straight from the bag!
I was wondering if the spreadable cheese is cream cheeswe

Hi Cindy,
Yes, it is a spreadable cream cheese that comes in a tub. To give you an idea of what to look for, if you look at the second photo, the tubs are behind the chocolate.
Hope that helps!
Monica
JoJo, just wanted to be sure you know about an ingredient I had inadvertently omitted from the list – 1 can of sweetened condensed milk!
I have a pudding-loving son who would love me forever if I made this for him. Thanks forca super simple recipe.
You are very welcome Missy, hope you enjoy this recipe, the result is delicious!!

Recipe says beat in milk, but I don’t see milk listed. What type and how much?
I am so sorry Pam, thank goodness you noticed this. I had to redo the recipe and somehow missed the milk! Thanks Pam, I have changed the ingredient list and added the 1 can of sweetened condensed milk!
Oh, I so could use a “chocolate fix” right now! That looks definitely decadent and super simple…….my kind of dessert!
I could a chocolate fix now too Pat and you are right, this one is both decadent and super simple!
Thank you for letting me know. I really appreciate it!
You are welcome Missy, I felt so terrible about omitting the milk!
Just found this recipe on Pinterest. I’m hosting a dinner party for my husbands work in a little while and this looks like the perfect dessert! I how much 2 tubs of cream cheese is. Is it two small tubs? Two Costco sizes tubs? Thank you!
Kristin, it is two “smaller” sized tubs. I’m sorry I don’t have the exact volume but it is the smaller size that you would get in a regular grocery store. You will love this, it is delicious!!
Ooooh, that looks so good! I love the swirly mix picture!
Thanks Nicol, these are incredibly good!!
this looks amazing! I’m so making these over the holidays!
I have the block pil cream cheese on hand, can I use those?
Sorry Mary but the block type doesn’t work with this recipe.
I just wiped this up, and put in freezer. If end result is as good as the mixture were in for a treat! Thanks Monica, and merry Christmas!
Hope you love it as much as we do Mary and wishing you a wonderful Christmas!
