Do you or someone in your family suffer from eczema? Are you aware of this condition and can you recognize the signs and symptoms? Do you know how eczema is treated?
I have had mild cases of eczema a few times in my life and can certainly appreciate how uncomfortable and bothersome it can be. My husband, however, is a long time sufferer and his outbreaks tend to be quite severe. Not only does he suffer from some of the typical symptoms, but because of the severity of his condition, he often has difficulty sleeping which comes with its own myriad of health problems.
Some Eczema Facts ~
- The most common form of eczema is know as atopic dermatitis.
- Eczema is a skin condition that often recurs.
- The immune system in a person’s skin overreacts to environmental or emotional triggers. This reaction results in symptoms such as redness and itching.
- With eczema, the skin cannot retain moisture and can become dry and tight.
- The skin becomes extremely itchy, red, scaly and irritated.
- Scratching can lead to the affected area developing a discharge and/or an infection occurring.
- Eczema can appear on many parts of the body.
- Atopic dermatitis, or eczema as it is commonly known, affects about 6 million people in Canada.
- Affects infants, children and adults.
- Eczema is not contagious, however, it tends to run in families.
- Many people who have eczema have a history of eczema, hay fever, or asthma in their families.
{This is a patch of eczema is on my husbands forearm near the crease of his elbow. It has been bothering him for weeks now and is extremely itchy and has even started to crust and ooze in a few places.}
What is Eczema?
According to the National Eczema Association, the term “eczema” is a general term used to describe dermatitis and can be interchangeably used. Although it comes in many forms, eczema mostly describes a dry skin condition that may be relieved by moisturizers and emollients. This skin condition is not contagious, so you cannot pass it on to other people or catch them from someone else.
What Causes Eczema?
A specific cause has yet to be identified. Many believe this skin condition is attributed to a combination of factors that include:
- Changes in temperature or humidity.
- Dry, irritable skin
- Chemical irritants, such as perfumes, harsh soaps, detergents, and household cleaners.
- Physical irritants, such as clothes made of rough or scratchy fabrics.
- Allergies (to dust, pollen, mold, animal dander, etc.)
- Stress
- The body’s immune system
- Anxiety
- Genetics
Symptoms of Eczema ~
- The most common symptom is red, swollen and itchy skin.
- Blisters and scaly patches are also possible symptoms.
- Blisters and scaly patches may ooze, crust and even bleed.
- Skin color may change and can become thick and leathery.
- Outbreaks can appear practically anywhere on the body and the location of the affected area can often be used to classify the particular type of eczema that the person is suffering from.
Diagnosis ~
Your family physician or other health care provider can make a diagnosis of eczema. While there are no tests to determine eczema, most often your doctor can tell if it’s eczema by looking at your skin and by asking a few questions.
Treatment ~
Although there is no cure, you can help manage the symptoms through a daily skin care routine that focuses on gentle cleansing and replenishing moisture. According to the Eczema Society, keeping skin moisturized is key to managing all types of eczema with topical steroids commonly used to bring flare ups under control.

Fortunately I’ve never suffered from this, although I do tend to get rashes if something brushes against my skin (on my arms). A doctor told me I have too many mast cells which gives me a condition called dermatographism. I you gently apply pressure to my arm with the back of a pen and write something, I get an itchy, raised red rope. At least I used to when I was under a ton of stress….it hasn’t happened in awhile. I worked w/ a woman at the school cafeteria who had a lot of eczema on her arms. I bet she would benefit from this product.
Hopefully your rashes are a thing of the past JoJo, that would not be fun at all!
oh that looks awful! I can’t believe the improvement after only a couple days!
I know Jennifer, it was very dramatic!
We have never had Eczema in our family, knock on wood. The itching must be so uncomfortable. Glad to know that Polysporin Eczema Essential works so well and fast.
My husband now swears by it Lyne!
That improvement is amazing! My sister has always struggled with Eczema I will tell her about these products
I was thrilled with how well it worked Amy and in such a short time frame!
Wow! What an improvement! I am thankful that me and my boys don’t have this skin condition although my toddler is allergic to dust and he gets itchy when he is exposed to it, we just put Polysporin on his skin and the itchiness is gone.
Wow! What an improvement and in just three days! That’s really something! I am just very thankful that we don’t have eczema. Although my toddler is allergic to dust, he gets itchy when he’s exposed to it, we just put Polysporin on the skin and it’s gone!
That’s great Pinx that it also works so well on his itchiness caused by dust, good to know!
Wow, that sure cleared up quick! I have psoriasis and know how painful flare-ups are. Glad to see that you have this under control with Polysporin.
Besos, Sarah
I used to suffer from eczema and can relate to those who still do. I am presently receiving allergy injections for environmental allergies, some of which you have specified in this blog, so my outbreaks are less frequent. However, on the few occasions that I do develop a rash I will keep this product in mind. Good to know.
You should see my hands. They are covered in eczema like that… everywhere. I Am going to HAVE to try this.
