If you have ever suffered from eczema, I don’t have to tell you how incredibly itchy and irritating eczema can be. Until recently I had only suffered a mild form of eczema, but lately, it has progressed to a more severe form, complete with eczema blisters.
I find my legs and shoulders especially itchy, to the point where I cannot help but scratch until my skin bleeds. This often makes my rash even worse, which leads to more inflammation and even more itching. It soon becomes a vicious itch –>scratch –>itch–>scratch cycle that is very difficult to break – #EczemaAndMe!
This is a recent flare up of mine, I definitely was experiencing the itch –> scratch –> itch –> scratch –> cycle that is common with eczema.
My husband, is a long time eczema sufferer and his outbreaks tend to be quite severe. (I now have a lot more sympathy for his suffering!) Not only does he have the typical symptoms I have mentioned above, but because of the severity of his condition, he often has difficulty sleeping, which comes with its own myriad of health problems.
We have both been having eczema flare-ups recently. Not sure if it is the change in temperature, but I did know we needed to find some relief…fast! Unless it is urgent, we often wait a week to ten days for an appointment with our family physician. That was not going to be fast enough for us, we needed some over-the-counter help.
As a nurse, I have an understanding of eczema causes, symptoms and treatment. However, before I purchased any eczema relief products, I wanted even more information I decided to combine a bit of more in-depth research with a #CollectiveBias blog post that I am writing.
Here is what I have found:
What is Eczema ~
According to the National Eczema Association, the term “eczema” is a general term used to describe dermatitis and can be interchangeably used. Although it comes in many forms, eczema mostly describes a dry skin condition that may be relieved by moisturizers and emollients. This skin condition is not contagious, so you cannot pass it on to other people or catch them from someone else.
Some Eczema Facts ~
- The most common form of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis.
- Eczema is a skin condition that often recurs.
- The immune system in a person’s skin overreacts to environmental or emotional triggers. This reaction results in symptoms such as redness and itching.
- With eczema, the skin cannot retain moisture and can become dry and tight.
- The skin becomes extremely itchy, red, scaly and irritated.
- Scratching can lead to the affected area developing a discharge and/or an infection occurring.
- Eczema can appear on many parts of the body.
- Atopic dermatitis, or eczema as it is commonly known, affects about 6 million people in Canada.
- Affects infants, children and adults.
- Eczema is not contagious, however, it tends to run in families.
- Many people who have eczema have a history of eczema, hay fever, or asthma in their families.
Causes of Eczema ~
A specific cause has yet to be identified. Many believe this skin condition is attributed to a combination of factors that include:
- Changes in temperature or humidity.
- Dry, irritable skin
- Chemical irritants, such as perfumes, harsh soaps, detergents, and household cleaners.
- Physical irritants, such as clothes made of rough or scratchy fabrics.
- Allergies (to dust, pollen, mold, animal dander, etc.)
- Stress
- The body’s immune system
- Anxiety
- Genetics
Symptoms of Eczema ~
- The most common symptom is red, swollen and itchy skin.
- Blisters and scaly patches are also possible symptoms.
- Blisters and scaly patches may ooze, crust and even bleed.
- Skin color may change and can become thick and leathery.
- Outbreaks can appear practically anywhere on the body and the location of the affected area can often be used to classify the particular type of eczema that the person is suffering from.
Diagnosis ~
Your family physician or other health care provider can make a diagnosis of eczema. While there are no tests to determine eczema, most often your doctor can tell if it’s eczema by looking at your skin and by asking a few questions.
How to Find Eczema Relief ~
Although there is no cure, you can help manage the symptoms through a daily skin care routine that focuses on gentle cleansing and replenishing moisture. According to the Eczema Society, keeping skin moisturized is key to managing all types of eczema with topical steroids commonly used to bring flare ups under control.
During my research I learned that Polysporin carries the Eczema Society of Canada Seal of Acceptance. Since I was heading to the mall, I decided to stop at Walmart to pick up some Polysporin Daily Moisturizing Cream, in the hope it would help.
I thought the Daily Mosturizing Cream I was looking to buy would be in the pharmacy, but was having a bit of difficulty locating it. I asked for help at the pharmacy desk and the staff were more than happy to help and took me to the exact shelf where I would find the cream.
For some reason I was looking for the Polysporin cream in the ointment/first aid section, but I should have known to look for it on the shelves with the other moisturizing lotions. (Not enough coffee I guess…lol.)
I took the cream home and we immediately started using it.
In a matter of just a couple days of using the Polysporin Daily Moisturizing Cream, my husband and I both noticed a huge improvement in our eczema.
Just look at the three-day difference in my husband’s inner elbow, it is quite dramatic!
My family and I are long time users of many Polysporin products and I have the utmost confidence and trust in the brand. We now use the complete line of Polysporin Eczema products and are especially fond of the Polysporin® Eczema Essentials™ Daily Moisturizing Cream, and use it as part of our daily routine.

This is a little off topic, but who is loving the express checkout at Walmart? Honestly, it was packed the day I was there and at least 12 people were ahead of me in line. We moved along “tickidy boo” and I was at a checkout in less than 5 minutes!

I’ve had eczema my whole life, but I hadn’t had a flare up in a few years until over the summer. It was the worst one I could remember. Usually I get a few itchy spots, put some cocoa butter on it, and it goes away. This was not the case at all this time. I had it all over both forearms, in between fingers, and on my foot. I actually had to get a prescription medicine this time because nothing else was working. I may have to try this lotion because I’m not supposed to use the prescription unless I have the raised bumps because it is a very potent formula.
Thanks for your informative post! My eczema is driving me nuts lately!
I feel your pain Erica, and having eczema on your foot and in-between your fingers…ugggg…that would feel so horrible! Honestly this worked very well for us. (I use a corticosteroid when it is unbearable, but like you said, you need to be very careful with using it. Polysporin actually makes three different eczema products. The daily moisturizing cream I mentioned and they also make an ointment as well as a body wash. Here is the link if you want to check it out – http://www.polysporin.ca/eczema Good luck Erica, I hope you find relief.
Wow, those photos look promising!! I just picked up the moisturising cream yesterday- looking forward to trying it out!
