As a nurse, I know the importance of a yearly flu shot. Sure, with the exception of the H1N1 strain, this pathogen doesn’t garner the same concern as other headline-grabbing viruses (such as Ebola and enterovirus D68), but a seasonal flu is not to be messed with.

Flu season typically starts around now and lasts until about April. Seasonal influenza (the flu) is a serious illness that infects millions of Canadians every year. It is a common infectious respiratory disease that begins in the nose and throat. It is highly contagious and can spread rapidly from person to person. Flu cases result in approximately 12,000 hospitalizations and, on average, 3,500 deaths in Canada each year.*

How can influenza be prevented or diminished? Simple, with the flu shot.

The best way to protect yourself from influenza (the flu) is to get a flu vaccine every year. The flu vaccine is safe and effective.

It is recommended that everyone older than 6 months should get a flu vaccine. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of complications.Getting a flu vaccine:*

  • protects you if you are exposed to the virus
  • stops you from getting very sick
  • prevents you from passing on the virus to others.

However, it is important that you get a new flu vaccine every year. There are two reasons for this:*

  • The effects of the flu vaccine can wear off, so you need a booster every flu season.
  • The flu virus usually changes from year to year, so the vaccine must be updated to protect people fully.

Speak to your health care provider, pharmacist or local health unit about getting the vaccine. Find a clinic near you where you can get a flu shot.

The flu shot is only good if you don’t have bad effects afterward. I’ve only had 2 flu shots in my life and reacted horribly to both. I’ve lived in Texas most of my life and never had a flu. Only ever had one flu and it was shortly after I moved to Utah. The first time I had a flu shot, my arm was in serious pain for at least a week afterward and I felt crummy. The second time, I was pregnant and I got the shot more to protect my unborn child than myself. However, after I received it, my arm again was in agony, not for a week this time but for a few days. I couldn’t lift it for almost a day and then when I could, if I tried to lift anything heavier than a couple pounds, it hurt. I couldn’t even hold a milk jug in that hand without being in agony. I will never get a flu shot again my entire life unless I am pregnant again, because protecting my unborn child is worth the agony, but for myself personally, the only flu I ever had my whole life wasn’t that bad and honestly I’d rather endure that than the agony I’ve dealt with on the vaccine. Vaccines are not always good for you!
