I LOVE yogurt and eat it almost everyday.  Most of us are familiar with yogurt and it’s benefits; but are you acquainted with the benefits of kefir?  Do you know what kefir is?

Until recently, I did not have much knowledge of kefir.  I had heard of it, knew it was a  yogurt like drink, but that was about it.


So, I have done a bit of research and this is what I have found:

  • Kefir is a fermented milk drink made with kefir “grains” (a yeast/bacterial fermentation starter).
  • Originating over 2,000 years ago in the Caucasus Mountains – – where many people live well over 100 years — kefir has been associated with a long list of health benefits.
  • Kefir is cultured for twelve hours, whereas most yogurts are cultured anywhere from two to eight hours. It is that extra time that gives kefir its high probiotic activity count.
  • It has a thinner consistency than yogurt and is typically sold as a beverage. You can drink it, pour it over cereal and granola, use it as a base in dips, or blend it with fruit to make a smoothie.
  • Kefir is a source of probiotics, live organisms (like bacteria and yeast) that, when consumed in certain amounts, is considered to exert health benefits.
  • Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are thought to be good for your health, especially your digestive system. Your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called good bacteria, because they help keep your digestive system healthy.
  • Probiotics are also thought to help inhibit the growth of unfriendly, disease-causing bacteria and stimulate the body’s immune response.
  • Drinking kefir and consuming foods to which kefir has been added boosts the amount of “good” intestinal flora.
  • The  PC® Kefir milks I have been drinking contain 2 billion probiotic live active cultures per 250mls.  Which is about three times the probiotics of many yogurts.

It took me a while to get used to drinking plain kefir, I found the taste and texture a bit unusual.  I find the flavoured kefir more to my liking and have also used both the flavoured and the plain in smoothies, which are delicious! You can also find kefir in frozen treats and there are also dips available that use kefir as the base.  Add some whole grain crackers or crunchy vegetables to a platter with kefir dip and you have a tasty, healthy snack.

    I drink Kefir for its high levels of Probiotics. I find that it really helps with some GI issues I have. I have not tried the PC brand yet but I will definitely be checking it out.

    I haven’t drank this yet but I love that it has 3x the probiotics compared to yogurt, I find as I am getting older this is great for my stomach, I tend to be a little finicky with tastes so im guessing mixing it into my smoothies would be the best option for me, can’t wait to try it !

  10. Kefir has quite the history! I have never tried it, but i have seen it more in the store lately – i would consume it in smoothies, i think, or just as is.

  22. I know about kefir but have never tried it as I’ve been trying to cut back on dairy. I’m a fan of kombucha but have been considering trying kefir instead as its more readily available in stores (and cheaper!)

  45. I have never tried Kelfir and have never even heard of it. I would like to try the Mango Coconut as those two flavours together are getting me salivating. I am in my 50’s and would like to improve my digestive health and this may be my answer.

  58. I have tried Kefir, it tastes like a drinkable yogurt, it’s yummy! I like the non-effervescent types better. I love that they are high in probiotics. I just drink it straight.

  59. I have tried Kefir. I used to make it actually but stopped as I was the only one who would consume it at my house and it made more than I could keep up with. I love to put it in smoothies and I prefer the plain so there is no added sugar.

  77. I have recently just started reading about kefir, and definitely believe the health benefits. I love yogurt, but somehow it just doesn’t seem to be “enough”. I’d have to eat a lot more of it, to get similar benefits to a lot less kefir.
    While I have not tried kefir, I certainly am looking to find some.

    hubby and I tried the strawberry PC Kefir , specifically for the heath benefits – but we weren’t sold on the texture … so we added ti to smoothies …. perfect!

  97. I have only recently heard of Kefir while exploring healthier nutrition for us. We have not tried it yet but I am sure we eventually will. The Coconut Mango would probably be the one I would try first and I would use it for a smoothie and add some fresh mango to it as well.

    We have been using kefir in our family for years. It’s great on cereal, good to cook with, Plain kefir, poured on sliced cucumbers with a bit of chopped mint is wonderful

    I have never in my life tried Kefir. But my son has special needs & we’ve been seeing a dietician who recommends kefir for his gastrointestinal issues. So we are looking into this to try, & I’m glad to see some flavors he’d manage to drink.
