Visit to the Winter Market and Lunch With My Sisters

Here on the east coast of Canada, our winters are always very, very long. Unless you are an avid outdoor activities enthusiast, it is often difficult to find something fun or interesting to do. I love going to our local Farmer’s Markets in the summer months and now our neighbouring community has started a winter market too!

The market is located inside one of the large greenhouses at Cedarcrest Gardens.  I thought this was such a fabulous use of a greenhouse the would otherwise, for the most part, be empty during the dog-days of winter.

This past Saturday, my sisters and I made a trip to this winter market.  What a vibrant place! It was packed, almost elbow to elbow,  with winter shoppers.

The goods being sold included everything from handcrafted birdhouses and pottery to jewelry, crafts, hand-made clothing, food of all kinds including ready to eat now, to cheeses, fish and vegetables.Winter-Market-001

It was a beautiful winter afternoon, the sun was shining and the temperatures were fairly moderate.

Gorgeous little shamrocks waiting for St. Patrick’s Day.

There was some locally made wine on hand.  I tried a little sip of both the red and white!  The white was very sweet, almost tasted like an ice wine.  The red was full-bodied and delicious!

These guys own a couple of my favourite restaurants in the community that I live in, Quispamsis.  They are expanding to the neighbouring city and had samples of some of their offerings on display.  There was smoked salmon and various cheeses, as well as, some sauces and dips that are made at the restaurant.

Lots of handmade crafts.  I loved the hobo bags as well as the various items crafted from local granite.  I had my eye on those tea-light holders!

There was also a large selection of handmade clothing that was fashioned from old sweaters and bits of upcycled clothing.

And, of course there was some lively music to add to the festive atmosphere and keep us all entertained.

We were tired, thirsty and hungry after all that walking at the market.  We decided to go to a nearby restaurant for a bite to eat and something cold to drink…in our case, a little wine with our lunch!

I had the spinach salad and it was so, so good!  The dressing was warm and it wilted the spinach just a bit.  Honestly, my plate was clean by the time I finished eating.

One of my sisters had a grilled panini and the other had crab cakes.

The restaurant is on a little lake, called Lily Lake.  Although frozen and snow-covered, it was still very beautiful. While we were there, many people were out for a walk either on the lake or on a trail located on the far side of the lake.

The bouncer?

We had so much fun at the winter market and during our sister’s lunch. What a fabulous way to spend a glorious winter afternoon!

That’s what’s been happening in and around the valley.  How about you? What do you like to do in the winter?  Are you a winter, outdoor enthusiast?

Those are great photos of a very fun day. I think we all had to use a LOT of restraint, not to spend oodles of money at the market.

  2. I had a fabulous time, too. I read to the end of your post with trepidation as I couldn’t remember if there was a photo of us after we had a little lunch with our wine!!LOL!
Your photos are gorgeous and it was just like being there again, Monica. Thanks for the reminder.
