I awoke yesterday morning to the terrible news that Newfoundland singer/songwriter Ron Hynes had died. He had suffered from cancer for several years; but still, his death came as a shock.
His songs were the songs of the people; his stories were our stories.
He wrote about things that mattered to us all. His work embodied originality and was a world away from the hollow, predictable sounds of commercial radio.
Very recently, I had the privilege to see this master perform in an intimate setting in Rothesay, New Brunswick.
I think the most fitting tribute to Ron Hynes is the music itself. So please, if you are a fan enjoy and if you are unfamiliar with his music, allow me to introduce you to this legend.
The iconic Sonny’s Dream
Hauntingly beautiful, Atlantic Blue, a tribute to the crew of the Ocean Ranger
God speed Ron, you will be missed.

So sad to hear of the passing of Ron. Sonny’s Dream is probably one of my all-time favourite songs. I grew up listening to it and even now hearing it gives me chills.
I know what you men Brenda, this song gives me chills too. Very sad news.

A very touching and well deserved tribute to Ron Hines. So glad you and Randy had the opportunity to sit down and enjoy his masterful music.
Thanks Pat, he was definitely in a league of his own.
