Hello Dolly Squares {aka Magic Bars} ~ Special Edition

This recipe has been around for as long as I can remember. Just about everyone I know has some version of the super popular, Hello Dolly Squares (aka Magic Bars).

Hello Dolly Squares

I have no idea where the name of these squares originated. However, in my active mind, I imagine this scenario:

Fifty, sixty, seventy or one hundred years ago someone created these squares. She (yes…c’mon, it had to be a woman who created these delicious layers of yumminess!) had no name for them, they were just a layering of whatever goodies she had in her cupboard.

She happened to make these “unnamed” squares when her friend “Dolly” came to visit. “Dolly” LOVED her creation so much that the next time “Dolly” came for a visit she made them again…this happened several times.

Everytime “Dolly” came for tea, this women made her these”unnamed” squares.

When “Dolly” knocked on her door, the women would open it and say… you guessed it, “Hello Dolly”.

The woman who first made these heavenly, layered squares soon began referring to her creation as Hello Dolly Squares, and the rest is  history!

See, I told you I have a very active imagination…lol

Anyway, it doesn’t matter where they originated. The fact is Hello Dolly Squares {aka Magic Bars}  are heavenly and wildly popular for a very good reason.

They take no time to make and will be the first squares to disappear from any plate of goodies! Just a simple graham cracker base, sweetened condensed milk and layers of whatever chocolate, nuts, coconut and dried fruit you have on hand.

I always include chocolate chips, nuts and coconut. Over the holidays, I like to make a “Special Edition” version of these squares. As well as the usual ingredients, I add white chocolate chips and dried cranberries.  You could also substitute chopped pistachios for the walnuts, that would look amazing at Christmas! (Why haven’t I thought of doing that until right now?)

Okay, I’m going to stop rambling on and share the recipe with you. I hope you enjoy these squares as much as we do.
