I love the summer. Not only is the weather beautiful but there is always an abundance of freshly picked fruit and vegetables available. Here in Atlantic Canada, strawberry season is nearing the end but the good news is, wild blueberry season is right around the corner!
Fresh blueberries are one of the most popular summer treats of all time. They are sweet, succulent, full of nutrients, and can be eaten freshly picked as well as incorporated into a variety of recipes.
Wild blueberries grow naturally in the acid soils of Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Maine. Producers clear away shrubs, bushes and grasses to allow the wild blueberry plants to grow, and then manage them carefully to obtain a crop. Wild blueberries are the most important fruit crop in Atlantic Canada.
As well as being delicious, blueberries are a good source of vitamin K. They also contain vitamin C, fibre, manganese and other antioxidants. Valued for its high levels of antioxidants, some nutritionists believe that if you make only one change to your diet, it should be to add blueberries. Some claim blueberries can help protect against heart disease and some cancers, as well as improve your memory.
