Happy 150th Birthday Canada!

It’s not too often you have the opportunity to celebrate a 150th birthday, but today we got to do just that! One hundred and fifty years ago today, Canada officially became a country.

While the weather was uncooperative here in Southern New Brunswick, it didn’t dampen our spirits and people came out in droves to celebrate this special day.

I met my sister, “in town” (aka Saint John) and we ventured “uptown”…Saint John’s city centre is at the top of a hill and has always been called “uptown”.  This is where the majority of the celebrations were taking place.

And, of course, in true Canadian fashion, the first thing we did was grab a “Tims”.

(Side note – I threw out my cup and forgot to “roll up the rim” of this special edition cup. 😕)

We sipped our coffee while wandering around Market Square, which was the hub of the Canada Day 150 celebration.

And of course, every birthday celebration needs a GIANT cake!

Built in 1876, the Saint John City Market is the oldest continuing farmer’s market in all of Canada.

The ceiling of the market was decorated with hundreds and hundreds of maple leaves, which were created by local schoolchildren. It was stunning!

The rain didn’t stop the annual Canada Day beach volleyball tournament.

No trip to the “uptown” area would be complete without a little rainy day stroll along the beautiful harbour front.

Finally, it’s somewhat of a tradition and a bit of fun to share this quintessential Canada Day rant. This was a 2000 commercial for Molson Canadian beer and has been called, by many, the greatest commercial ever made.  I don’t know if that’s true…but it is cute!

This is how I spent a few hours this Canada Day Saturday. What about you? How did you, your family and friends celebrate this milestone birthday!
