Earth Hour and Beyond – How to Participate

Earth Hour

Earth Hour 2018 is on March 24th 2018 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, your local time zone. The goal of Earth Hour is to raise awareness of the fragility of our planet and to unite people in protecting Earth, our only home!

It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then Earth Hour has grown to engage more than 180 countries and territories worldwide.

How to Participate During Earth Hour and Beyond –

From 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on March 24, 2018 switch off all lights and any unnecessary electronics in your home…yes, this includes your cell phone!

During Earth Hour:

  • Unplug and spend an hour with your family, just talking!
  • Host a candlelight dinner or Earth Hour party
  • Go stargazing
  • Play a board game by candlelight
  • Go for a family walk
  • Spot the homes and businesses around you that are participating in Earth Hour.
  • Gather art supplies and have everyone create a masterpiece…in the dark!
  • Make a family resolution to commit to reducing your carbon footprint.

Beyond Earth Hour:

  • Inform yourself and others on climate change and its impact on our planet, www.earthhour.org/blog is a great place to get started
  • Switch to LED lights
  • Say NO to paper and plastic; use reusable bags as often as possible
  • Walk or cycle to places and take public transportations
  • Go digital! Only print and make use of paper when necessary and always use both sides when possible
  • Eat wisely – Choose to consume sustainably-sourced products and only purchase what is necessary to minimize food wastage
  • Shop responsibly – Select products with biodegradable packaging and items made with natural and organic ingredients
  • Ditch the disposables; utilize reusable lunch-boxes and water bottles as much as you can.

  1. Congrats on your commitment to this event. I’m also thinking of turning off all the electronics at home and going out for a family walk. I hope more people will be committed and we will all do something good for our planet.
