The truth is, decluttering your kitchen and keeping it clutter-free doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, it’s not magic at all, and anyone can do it.

1.) Keep Things in Cabinets

Kitchens look much neater when its contents are kept behind closed doors, rather than storing them in the open. Open shelving is only a good idea if you are comfortable with a minimalist style, have items that match a unified colour pattern or only choose to display the beautiful things to keep everything looking tidy and intentional.

2.) Keep Counters Clear

Kitchen clutter starts on the counters. This is why most clutter-free kitchens have clear and tidy countertops. Resist the urge to use the counter as a place to place your magazines, dishes and miscellaneous items, instead find somewhere else to put them. It will only make your kitchen look dirty, even if it’s not.

Get rid of any unimportant counter décor, relocating small appliances and ensuring that everything on the counters is essential to your cooking.

3.) Put it Away

Everything should have its own place in your kitchen and nothing should be left on a whim. Every time you are about to put something down in the kitchen ensure that you put it where it belongs. If they are dirty dishes, put them in the dishwasher If it’s a pantry item, put it back in the pantry. Never leave things sitting out in the kitchen.

4.) The Fridge isn’t for Art

Using the fridge as an art gallery may be tempting, but it also makes your kitchen look extremely cluttered. Remove any excess notes, papers, lists, photos and magnets and just let the fridge do its job. Not only will your kitchen look neater almost immediately. but it will keep your more organized.

5.) Don’t Pile Things

Except for things like patterned napkins, pretty bowls or white plates, most things placed in piles just look disorganized. Never pile up pans, small appliance accessories, pot lids or kitchen wrap all over the counters.

If you are looking to make your kitchen more clutter free, turn those piles into beautiful areas. Hang the pots on the wall, store pot lids on magnetic strips and keep plastic wrap in a drawer.

6.) Clean Once a day

To maintain a clutter-free and organized kitchen space, you have to be able to see the value of tidiness. That doesn’t mean though, that you must be immersed in cleaning every single week, just do something once a day. This will help to make sure that the kitchen remains both maintained and clean at the same time.

7.) Have one Messy Drawer

This may seem counterproductive, but every kitchen deserves a cheat spot. This will give you somewhere to stash things until you have found a better place to put it. It is important though, that you are intentional and specific with where that spot is. Pick one drawer and don’t go beyond that.

8.) Always Clean After Using the Kitchen

Always leave the kitchen in better shape than you found it. Meaning, that you should always give the counters a quick wipe down after using the kitchen or take water glasses out of the sink and load them into the dishwasher. Always take a good look at your kitchen and figure out at least one small thing you can do to make it a little bit cleaner.

Maintaining a clean and clutter-free kitchen doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be downright simple as long as you remain organized, stay on task and allow yourself one drawer to cheat with.

How do you keep your kitchen organized? Or…do you?
