The Twisted Sisters at the Captain’s Lookout Cottages

A few weeks ago my sisters and I went on a little girls getaway.  We only had a couple of days, so didn’t want to venture too far. We decided on a staycation in our home province of New Brunswick, where we would explore, or re-explore in some cases, the beautiful Fundy coastline.

We based our stay out of one of the cutest little cottages, Captain’s Lookout Cottages, located in New Horton, N.B. (sounds like it could be in a Dr. Seuss book doesn’t it…lol). We picked this cottage, not only for its geographical relevance, but also because it looked so darn cute!

The cottages offer a beautiful panoramic view.  Now to clarify just a bit. The website said,”…breathtaking panoramic view of the Bay of Fundy…”.  While panoramic and unquestionably beautiful, you could see the bay; but it was just a wee speck of the bay.

There was actually quite a bit to do on site.  There was a playground for the kids, a communal fire pit surrounded by Muskoka chairs, as well as, individual fire pits at each cottage (Bonus – wood for the fires was all supplied as part of the rental fee).

There was a small freshwater lake to the right of our cottage, it was just a short five-minute walk (and that’s carrying a wine glass) from our door.  There is also a saltwater lake, yes you read that right, a “saltwater lake” behind the cottages.  It was advertised as short hike,  it took us about thirty minutes, one way through very rough terrain.  Definitely not to be attempted with young kids until the trail has been groomed. In all fairness though, Hurricane Arthur had passed through a few weeks earlier and left a path of destruction over much of southern New Brunswick.  (We notified the owners of the trail’s condition)

Hiking, horseback riding, whale watching, rappelling, shorebird watching, beach-combing, biking, zip lining, hiking and kayaking are all nearby.  You can also explore beautiful Fundy National Park, Cape Enrage and the Hopewell Rocks, all only a short drive from the cabins.

The Captain’s Lookout Cottages consist of six family owned, fully equipped, house keeping units. There are both one and two bedroom units, we stayed in a two bedroom.  We had a fully equipped kitchen, 4 piece bath, dining area & living area.  One bedroom had two double beds and the other a king size bed.

It was all pretty laid back and family like.  The door to the cottage was left unlocked for us and the key was left on the table.

Our cottage came complete with linens & towels, dishes, pots, pans, utensils, stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee perk & coffee, tea, spices, kettle, toaster,  barbecue, deck furniture & picnic tables.   High-speed WiFi, Satellite Television, DVD player, games & movies. Laundry facilities also available for guests staying more than 2 nights.

We spent many hours curled up on the couch and in those chairs, sipping wine and talking until the wee hours.

King size bedroom. We always give the best bed to the driver. It’s out of the photo but on the wall at the end of the bed, crafted from pine, is some open storage.

Double bedroom.  I slept in the far bed.

I am the youngest so they always gang up on me…lol!  They always make me sleep next to the tent canvas so I’ll be stabbed first or clawed by the grizzly; farthest from the bathroom…which is OK, I have a bladder of steel, sitting in the worst seat, …etc, etc!)

Right now, I guarantee they are both saying, what the he#&, we don’t do that – and they are right, I’m just joking with them! They don’t pick on me at all.  If anything they baby and protect me.  Well, except for sleeping by the canvas, that part is totally true!!

We also saw a couple of quirky things in the New Horton area.

An unusual name for a cemetery.

A sweet “snowman” made from albino pumpkins.

An unusual shoe tree?  On closer inspection we could see a sign on the tree which read, “Walk for Hope”.

Meticulously clean, comfortable and rustic these cabins are the perfect place for your family to relax and enjoy everything this beautiful area has to offer.
