Thankfully, when I look out my windows now, I’m starting to see some signs of life!  Fresh green grass is sprouting up on the lawn, there are buds on the trees and the temperatures are now consistently on the plus side of the thermometer! Spring is finally here and everyone is starting to make plans for the warmer days … [Read more...]

Mini Eggs & Pudding Easter Cookies

Mini Eggs & Pudding Easter Cookies ~ I have made this basic recipe, using chocolate chips, for what seems like forever! I think I got it from my mom, but I am not sure where she discovered it or its origin.  Because of the somewhat unusual addition of a pudding mix to these cookies, I suspect the recipe may have come from a pudding company. Perhaps, at one time it was written on the package itself or found in a magazine or product insert. I have made the Pudding Chocolate Chip version … [Read more...]

Easy to Make, Broccoli Cheddar Soup

A couple of weeks ago, I was picking up a few items at our local grocery store and noticed a huge clamlike container of very fresh looking broccoli florets for only $1.99! What a great buy considering one bunch of two small heads of broccoli was $2.79 that same day. I should have snapped a pic of it, so I could show you, but that would have made too much sense...lol. We used about one-quarter of the broccoli at dinner that night, but I still had cups and cups of beautifully green … [Read more...]

Bountiful Breakfast Bowl with Turkey Sausage

Disclosure: This post is sponsored in partnership with Canadian Turkey. As always, all opinions are our own. I love the slow, easy pace of this time of year. The hectic holidays are just a memory and life has settled back into somewhat of a routine. Work and school have resumed and the off hours are reserved for fun winter activities like ice skating, tobogganing, skiing and snowshoeing. The cold weather and lots of outdoor activities make the winter months the perfect time of year for … [Read more...]

Banana Oatmeal Muffins

By now, I am sure many of you know that I LOVE muffins. I love baking them and unfortunately, I also love eating them! This past weekend, my sister, a friend and I were having a big multi-family garage/yard sale at my place.  The sale was starting at 8AM but we decided we needed to meet by 7:30 to put up some signs and make a few last-minute adjustments to the placement of some larger items. I knew we would be going through multiple pots of coffee...another of my weaknesses, so I … [Read more...]

Grammie’s Oatmeal Molasses Brown Bread

I mentioned in an earlier post how most of Canada is now in the midst of the "dog days" of winter.  I live on the east coast and we have already been totally pummeled this year and winter has officially, barely begun. On December 23rd we were entombed in ice more than an inch thick, lost power for days (many for up to 11 days!) had four successive snow storms and are now in the midst of bone chilling, record-breaking cold temperatures. What is a girl to do with all of this wild weather but … [Read more...]

Cranberry Orange Muffins

I think by now you are all aware of my obsession with muffins. Honestly, I think I could live on muffins alone! That reminds me of something. I remember working as a nurse on some of the hospital units and physicians would occasionally admit patients, usually women, under the diagnosis of "Tea and Toast Syndrome". What usually happened was, these wee women were living on their own. They didn't have the will or inclination to go to the bother of preparing a nutritious meal, just for … [Read more...]

Cranberry Pistachio Shortbread Cookies

For as long as I can remember, Shortbread Cookies have been a Christmas tradition in our home. Back when I was first married, every December, I would spend hours pouring over recipe books and magazines in search of the perfect holiday treats. Then, my mom and I would get together a couple of days before Christmas for an epic, daylong baking session. By the end of the day, we would be very tired; but it was well worth it because we would each have tins full of cookies, squares, and … [Read more...]

Coconut Macaroons

Coconut Macaroons I can barely believe it is the middle of December. It just feels like a few days ago we were sitting out on our deck...the same deck that is now covered in snow! Leisurely reading on the deck has been replaced with frantic shopping, cleaning, and baking! While we are trying to somewhat “cut back” on the madness, we still want to celebrate Christmas and make it fun and memorable. One of the areas I have decided to pare down is baking as I don’t think we will be … [Read more...]

8 Tips for Entertaining at Home {w/Recipe}

Disclosure: This post is sponsored in partnership with Canadian Turkey. As always, all opinions are our own. Well...it's official! We had our first snowfall of the season a few days ago, so I guess I can no longer ignore that winter is indeed on its way. Although I will miss the warmer weather there is something very comforting and cozy about cold winter days. It's time for ice skating, warm fires, tobogganing and my favourite part, making hearty, healthy and delicious dinners for family and … [Read more...]

Apple Crisp

We all need to have a fabulous recipe for apple crisp in a repertoire.  It is not heavy like a pie and has all the same tastes, but with fewer calories. Not only is it the perfect dessert for a Sunday dinner, Thanksgiving or even Christmas, it is also easy to whip up for a midweek treat. I have made and tasted many apple crisps over the years, but none is as delicious as this one.  Honestly, you will want to hide in a closet with a pint of vanilla ice cream and a pan of this apple crisp and … [Read more...]
