Macaroni Surprise {Recipe}

When my husband makes dinner Macaroni Surprise is often his go-to meal.  He has worked with a couple of family recipes and created his "masterpiece".  It's so nice to walk in the door at dinner time and feel the love and smell the delicious aroma of this casserole baking!   Over the years, the kids and I have lovingly dubbed it "Macaroni Surprise". … [Read more...]

Chicken Parmesan

My husband is a Chicken Parmesan fanatic, it is his favourite meal and always his request when I ask him what he would like for his birthday dinner. A few years ago I was watching the Food Network and saw an episode where Tyler Florence made Chicken Parmesan, and that was it, I wanted to make it too!  I searched recipe books and online and by taking ideas from here and there, finally came up with what is now one of our family's favourite recipes. We make it several times a year and it just … [Read more...]

Tara’s Pasta Sauce {Recipes}

A colleague of mine gave me this recipe years ago,  we love it so much we have never bought a jar of pasta sauce since.  We make in several times a year and almost always have a jar or two in the freezer, perfect for a quick, no fuss dinner! After cooking I usually make a lasagna or two and freeze the rest in freezer containers. {This recipe is slightly modified from the original} {Taken after about 4 hours of simmering, did it ever smell good!} … [Read more...]

Lady Ashburnham Pickles

Lady Ashburnham Pickles ~ We haven't made these, or any pickles for that matter,  in quite a few years.  No reason for the pickle drought, except maybe laziness.  Well,  this year we turned our kitchen into "Pickle Central" and made dill, sweet Bread and Butter and this delicious, all time favourite of ours and many other Maritimers, Lady Ashburnham. Our  favourite way to eat these is with a creamy mound of mashed potatoes, but they have an almost relish like consistency so they would also be … [Read more...]

Our First Attempt at Making Dill Pickles

In our house, we are all dill pickle fanatics and have often talked about the possibility of making a batch ourselves.  Our son, who lives in Ontario, is home for a couple weeks vacation, he also wants to learn, so we thought it would be a great time to attempt the making of the dill pickles. On Saturday we all went to a local Farmer's Market and along with lots of other great produce and fish we picked up a basket of pickling cucumbers.  We now felt committed, and yesterday the process … [Read more...]

Deer Guard ~ Do The Deer Think of Your Planters as a Salad Bowl?

Deer Guard ~ Until a couple of days ago, we had some pretty lush looking planters on either side of the garage door...notice my use of the word "had".  The poor deer have come to think of our planters and flower gardens as one big salad bowl.  I don't blame them, massive subdivisions have sprouted up overnight and the deer have nowhere to go.   This is part of the herd, sorry for the winter shot. The deer have been in stealth mode lately, hiding out and having babies! I don't mind … [Read more...]

Veggie Burger ~ {Recipe}

Veggie Burger ~ I am not technically a vegetarian, I really don't eat much beef or pork at all, but I do eat fish, poultry and the odd piece of bacon. The rest of my family loves a nicely barbecued burger, but, they are definitely not my thing! I always felt a bit "left out" when I just had salad or whatever other side dish we happened to be having.  So, I decided to do a bit of research and came up with this recipe. If you're looking for a "burger feel" to your veggie burger, this may … [Read more...]

Blueberry Sour Cream Muffins

Blueberry Sour Cream Muffins ~ I have a confession to make, I am totally addicted to making muffins and will very often make them several times a week! I recently had a container of sour cream that was soon due to expire.  So, as any muffinaholic would do, I started wracking my brain for muffin recipes that use sour cream...and blueberries. Blueberries, because I have ten pounds of gorgeous, wild, Pennfield blueberries stored in my freezer. I found this recipe tucked away in my totally … [Read more...]
