A colleague of mine gave me this recipe years ago,  we love it so much we have never bought a jar of pasta sauce since.  We make in several times a year and almost always have a jar or two in the freezer, perfect for a quick, no fuss dinner! {This recipe is slightly modified from the original} {Taken after approximately 4 hours of simmering, did it ever smell good!} … [Read more...]

ictures from Mom's camera 2011 - 2012 2069 edited 2 with text

In our home, come Friday we are all getting a bit tired of the work-week and looking forward to the week-end.  We always try to have Friday evening dinners be a bit more relaxed and we all usually pitch in to help.  We'll barbecue burgers,  have tacos or quite often make home made pizza; we like something laid back but yummy,  a celebration of a busy weeks completion and the anticipation of the week-end ahead. As yummy as those food items are, I find we're sometimes stuck in the rut of always … [Read more...]

Lady Ashburnham Pickles

Lady Ashburnham Pickles

Lady Ashburnham Pickles ~ We haven't made these, or any pickles for that matter,  in quite a few years.  No reason for the pickle drought, except maybe laziness.  Well,  this year we turned our kitchen into "Pickle Central" and made dill, sweet Bread and Butter and this delicious, all time favourite of ours and many other Maritimers, Lady Ashburnham. Our  favourite way to eat these is with a creamy mound of mashed potatoes, but they have an almost relish like consistency so they would also be … [Read more...]

Our first attempt at making dill pickles.

006 edited

In our house, we are all dill pickle fanatics and have often talked about the possibility of making a batch ourselves.  Our son, who lives in Ontario, is home for a couple weeks vacation, he also wants to learn, so we thought it would be a great time to attempt the making of the dill pickles. On Saturday we all went to a local Farmer's Market and along with lots of other great produce and fish we picked up a basket of pickling cucumbers.  We now felt committed, and yesterday the process … [Read more...]

July means it is Strawberry Shortcake time! {Recipe}

005 - edited

Where I live, in southern New Brunswick, the first week of July usually means its strawberry season.  Well for me, strawberry season means it's time for Strawberry Shortcake! I know there are many variations on this tasty treat...first there's the bottom layer; there's biscuits, white cake, sponge or angel food cake and marianne shells to name a few.  Then the berries themselves; whole, sliced, mashed, lots of juice, a little juice or maybe even frozen.  Finally the cream; freshly whipped, … [Read more...]

Veggie Burger ~ {Recipe}

002 - edited

Veggie Burger ~ I am not technically a vegetarian, I really don't eat much beef or pork at all, but I do eat fish, poultry and the odd piece of bacon. The rest of my family loves a nicely barbecued burger, but, they are definitely not my thing! I always felt a bit "left out" when I just had salad or whatever other side dish we happened to be having.  So, I decided to do a bit of research and came up with this recipe. … [Read more...]
