The upcoming holiday season has always been my favourite time of the year. Sure, I do love many things about the other seasons, but for me, there is something extra special and cozy about this time of the year.
If there’s a downside, it would be the fact the holidays also seem to be very hectic. Plus, it’s often a time for indulging, so many of us tend to forgo our healthier habits. On top of that, most of us are constantly on-the-go with everything from shopping and entertaining to numerous holiday themed activities and more.
For many of us, that’s not a major issue. After a few days we easily transition back to our healthier lifestyle. However, for those living with diabetes, it’s often not that simple and the holidays can be a challenge.
If you caught one of my earlier posts, Being Thankful Isn’t Reserved Only for Thanksgiving, you will know my family has a long history of diabetes; I have several aunts, nieces and cousins with this condition.
Even though those living with diabetes know it’s vital to regularly check their glucose levels, during this hectic time of the year, it can be easy to occasionally forget.
Unfortunately for those living with diabetes, even a small change in their regular behaviour can have a big impact on their glucose levels. Because of this, it’s extremely important to have the right tools to help monitor their health, while still getting to enjoy the festivities of the holiday season.
The FreeStyle Libre flash-glucose monitoring system offers a solution for people living with diabetes to stay on track by checking their glucose levels frequently, without the need for painful finger pricks¹. It makes it easy to make informed decisions so you can relax and enjoy the holiday festivities.
How does it work?
With every scan, the FreeStyle Libre tells you your current glucose reading, as well as an arrow showing the direction your glucose levels are heading in. It also stores the last 8 hours of glucose data² so you can see trends and patterns of your glucose level, which is helpful when you need to make any medication or other health decisions.
It has two individual components: the FreeStyle Libre sensor which is designed to be easy to apply and easy to wear and the FreeStyle Libre Reader or the LibreLink app on a compatible smartphone³. With just a one second scan of the FreeStyle Libre reader or smartphone over the sensor worn on the back of the upper arm, you’ll be provided with all the information you need to know if you’re dipping lower or jumping higher.
Your health is important year-round, so it’s important to be conscious of it during the holiday season – a time when it can be easy to slip, but the FreeStyle Libre flash-glucose monitoring system can help!

*The FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system and LibreLink app (“App”), when used with the FreeStyle Libre sensor, is indicated for measuring interstitial fluid glucose levels in adults aged 18 years and older with diabetes mellitus. If you are using the FreeStyle LibreLink app, you must also have access to a blood glucose monitoring system as the app does not provide one. Always read and follow the label/insert for detailed instructions and indication of use.
A finger prick test using a blood glucose meter is required during times of rapidly changing glucose levels when interstitial fluid glucose levels may not accurately reflect blood glucose levels or if hypoglycemia or impending hypoglycemia is reported by the system or when symptoms do not match the System readings.
For a complete glycemic picture, scan once every 8 hours.
The FreeStyle LibreLink app is compatible with Near-Field Communication (NFC) -enabled phones running Android OS 5.0 or higher and with iPhone 7 and higher running iOS 11 or higher.
