Chocolate Pudding Dirt Cups

  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Garnish - Chocolate cookie crumbs for the "dirt" and candy worms.
  1. Put sugar into a heavy saucepan and then sift in cocoa, cornstarch and salt. (If you don't have a sifter, just use the back of a spoon to be sure you break up all the cocoa) Whisk together to combine.
  2. While whisking, gradually add milk.
  3. Whisking constantly, bring to a boil over medium heat; boil and stir for 2 minutes. You will see the mixture thicken. (The pudding is susceptible to burning, especially as it starts to thicken so whisk, whisk, whisk.)
  4. Remove from the heat; stir in butter and vanilla.
  5. Scrape mixture into a bowl and place plastic wrap directly on the pudding to prevent a skin from forming.
  6. Cool slightly.
  7. Assembly - Spoon some dirt into the bottom of each serving cup, then a little pudding, a little more dirt, and a little more pudding. Using a chopstick, push a worm or two into each cup. You can cut them in half if you wish so it looks like the head and tail are out of the pudding and the middle of the worm is still in the "dirt". Sprinkle with a few more crumbs to finish.
  8. Chill until serving.
If you have a larger family, you may want to double this recipe.
