There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a beer or a glass of wine; but, sometimes I want something a little special, like this Maritime Mist Cocktail.
A couple of weeks ago, Music Man and I were in the kitchen, prepping Sunday dinner. We will often have a glass of wine while getting dinner ready. This week, I suggested we should make a fun cocktail instead and asked him if he was interested.
Music Man laughed and said, “Sure, go for it”. I wasn’t sure what we had on hand for ingredients, but had a quick look through the fridge and liquor cabinet. I came up with some vodka, clementines and cranberry juice. The Maritime Mist was about to be born!
We debated a bit over what we should call this drink but finally settled on “Maritime”, because we live near the ocean, in the Maritimes and “Mist”, because the day we made this drink it was misty and a bit foggy out. Plus, we thought “Maritime Mist” had a nice ring to it!
- 1 ounce vodka
- 3 ounces cranberry juice
- 3 ice cubes
- 1 slice of clementine zest (Use a small sharp knife to remove a small THIN slice of the orange part of the clementine peel. You don't want any of the white pith as the pith is very bitter.)
- 3 fresh or frozen cranberries
- A wedge of clementine to rim glass
- 2-3 tsp white sugar for rimming glass
- Sprinkle a couple teaspoons of white sugar onto a small flat saucer.
- Run pulp portion of clementine wedge around the rim of a chilled 5-ounce cocktail or wine glass.
- Twist rim of glass in the sugar to coat
- Add 3 ice cubes to the glass
- Add 1 ounce of vodka
- Add 3 ounces of cranberry juice
- Gently twist the clementine zest, releasing the zest's essential oils and drop it into the glass.
- Garnish with 3 fresh or frozen cranberries.
I made this cocktail again for a dinner party and it was a huge hit.
I love how the sugar sweetens the sour cranberry juice just a bit and then you get a hint of citrus from the clementine zest.
This colourful cocktail is perfect for the winter months when clementines are in season, however, you could easily substitute the clementine zest with orange zest. The cocktail would still be delicious!
What is your favourite cocktail?
