Our volunteer shoreline cleanup! {Living Green}

The last few weeks I have been blogging a lot about the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This past Sunday "I put my money where my mouth is", so to speak.  Along with several awesome volunteers I took on the task of cleaning a local shoreline along the Gondola Point Beach. The funny thing is, at first glance the beach appeared quite pristine, however, once we started looking near the fringes of the sand we discovered quite a few unsavoury items. Here is the lengthy list from our … [Read more...]

Our Trip to the Local Farmer’s Market

I love this time of year, our local farmer's market, which up until a couple of weeks ago had a bit of local produce is now bursting at the seams with fresh beans, carrots, potatoes, garlic, radishes, onions, cucumbers, lettuces and the list goes on! Our market also carries organic meats, seafood, locally produced maple syrup and honey, ethnic foods, flowers, lots of crafts, baking and coffee.  {Let's face it, when you're at the market at the crack of dawn you need lots & lots of … [Read more...]

Our First Attempt at Making Dill Pickles

In our house, we are all dill pickle fanatics and have often talked about the possibility of making a batch ourselves.  Our son, who lives in Ontario, is home for a couple weeks vacation, he also wants to learn, so we thought it would be a great time to attempt the making of the dill pickles. On Saturday we all went to a local Farmer's Market and along with lots of other great produce and fish we picked up a basket of pickling cucumbers.  We now felt committed, and yesterday the process … [Read more...]

How Did the Deer Guard Recipe Work? {Photos – One month later}

A few weeks ago I posted a recipe for a concoction called Deer Guard.  It is sprayed on your flowers and the theory is the deer don't like the taste/smell of it and won't eat your plants. How did it work?  See for yourself... … [Read more...]

How to Barbecue a Safe Burger

Many of us will be barbecuing in the upcoming summer months; steaks, chicken, fish, pork and lots of hamburgers.  Did you know, eating undercooked ground beef  may result in a type of food poisoning commonly referred to as hamburger disease? The medical name for hamburger disease is Haemorrhagic Colitis. This disease is a type of food poisoning caused by a bacteria called E.coli 0157:H7. Also known as just E.coli, it can be found in many foods including meat, and especially in ground … [Read more...]

Veggie Burger ~ {Recipe}

Veggie Burger ~ I am not technically a vegetarian, I really don't eat much beef or pork at all, but I do eat fish, poultry and the odd piece of bacon. The rest of my family loves a nicely barbecued burger, but, they are definitely not my thing! I always felt a bit "left out" when I just had salad or whatever other side dish we happened to be having.  So, I decided to do a bit of research and came up with this recipe. If you're looking for a "burger feel" to your veggie burger, this may … [Read more...]

Blueberry Sour Cream Muffins

Blueberry Sour Cream Muffins ~ I have a confession to make, I am totally addicted to making muffins and will very often make them several times a week! I recently had a container of sour cream that was soon due to expire.  So, as any muffinaholic would do, I started wracking my brain for muffin recipes that use sour cream...and blueberries. Blueberries, because I have ten pounds of gorgeous, wild, Pennfield blueberries stored in my freezer. I found this recipe tucked away in my totally … [Read more...]

Update – Blogger to WordPress Move

The debate about which blogging platform is better is ongoing.  It's like asking someone if they prefer Pepsi or Coke.  Each has its own strengths and weaknesses; each has its own followers, and the decision as to which camp you belong, is a personal one. I'm "older" and didn't grow up with a computer, I had initially struggled with and had eventually become very comfortable with Blogger,  I was hesitant to make a change. However,  unless I was going to fork over a lot of money for a … [Read more...]
