Pumpkin Bread

I love the fall and winter.  I know that is a bit of an unusual statement, but it's true.  There is something so comforting and homey about those seasons.  From the gorgeous colours of fall to the crisp, cold magical whiteness of a winter's night, I love it all! Another thing I love about fall and winter is cooking and baking.  The coziness of the aromas of cinnamon, baking bread and freshly made cookies drifting from my oven is just impossible to resist!   One of my favourite things to bake … [Read more...]

Banana Chip Bread ~ Recipe

Banana Chip Bread is a bit of an easy and yummy variation on a traditional Banana Bread.  Kids and adults alike will love this simple to make and very tasty bread! If you are anything like me, you always have a couple overripe bananas hanging around in a bowl on the kitchen table.  Most banana bread and banana muffin recipes call for three ripe bananas. So, if I have only one or two, I peel them and slip them into a freezer bag, adding to the bag until I get three and then start a new … [Read more...]

Cranberry Pistachio Bark ~ A Little Piece of Heaven!

The first time I had this little piece of heaven on a plate, that is Cranberry Pistachio Bark, I fell totally in love!  It was about 15 years ago and a colleague of mine had brought in a tin of this luscious ambrosia during the holidays. After stuffing  a couple (OK, a few) pieces of this food of the gods into my mouth I knew I needed to have the recipe. Thankfully, my kind co-worker readily agreed and quickly gave me the recipe from memory.  Yes, it is that easy that you really don't even … [Read more...]

Pregnant? You May Want to Make a Groaning Cake! {#Recipe}

I just recently finished reading The Birth House by Ami McKay. In the book she spoke of labouring women making Groaning Cake and I knew, even though I will never again be pregnant, that I had to give it a try! Groaning Cake "The tradition of the groaning cake, or kimbly at (or following) a birth is an ancient one. Wives’ tales say that the scent of a groaning cake being baked in the birth house helps to ease the mother’s pain. Some say if a mother breaks the eggs while she’s aching, her labour … [Read more...]

Pudding Chocolate Chip Cookies {Recipe}

Pudding Chocolate Chip Cookies ~ I have had this recipe for what seems like forever!  I think I got it from my mom, but I am not sure where she discovered it or its initial origin.  I do remember when we were kids we often had pudding for dessert.  Because of the somewhat unusual addition of a pudding mix to these cookies,  I suspect the recipe may have come from a pudding company. Perhaps, at one time it was written on the package itself or found in a magazine or product insert. … [Read more...]

Crème Brûlée {Recipe}

The first time I had Crème Brûlée I was in a little seafood restaurant in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.  It was definitely a case of love at first bite! Crème Brûlée is a dessert consisting of a rich vanilla custard base topped with a contrasting layer of hard caramel. I believe it is traditionally served at room temperature but I have taken it directly from refrigerator, sprinkled on the sugar and broiled it; and let me tell you, it was delicious.  I loved the contrast between the creamy, cold … [Read more...]
