These are the opening lines of Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae's famous war memorial poem, In Flanders Fields. McCrae, an army surgeon, wrote the entire poem while sitting on the tailgate of an ambulance on May 3, 1915, during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium.
