With the exception of the super cold weather, I really don’t mind January. The hustle and bustle of the holidays are behind me and I can take a deep breath and finally relax a bit. This is the time of year for cozying up in front of a crackling fire or enjoying the warmth of a wood stove.
Plus, a New Year is a blank slate where you can write the next chapter of your life. There’s no time like the present to set the counter back to zero and reflect on your personal goals for the year, whether that is reading more books, picking up a new hobby or getting in 10,000 steps per day…which is one of mine.
The New Year is also the perfect time for a health refresh – from getting back into healthy habits to learning new ways to care for ourselves. By resetting and re-evaluating we’re able to get on the right track from the very start of the year.
Many people living with diabetes may be looking for a health refresh in the form of a less invasive way to monitor their glucose levels. The FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitor, from Abbott, can help. With the FreeStyle Libre system, you no longer need to finger prick¹ multiple times a day to check glucose levels. All you have to do is scan the sensor and you’ll have the information needed to make informed decisions.
How the FreeStyle Libre works –
With every scan, the FreeStyle Libre system tells you your current glucose reading, as well as an arrow showing the direction your glucose levels are heading in. It also stores the last 8 hours of glucose data² so you can see trends and patterns of your glucose level, which is helpful when you need to make any medication or other health decisions.
It has two individual components: the FreeStyle Libre sensor which is designed to be easy to apply and easy to wear and the FreeStyle Libre reader or the LibreLink app on a compatible smartphone³. With just a one second scan of the FreeStyle Libre reader or smartphone over the sensor worn on the back of the upper arm, you’ll be provided with all the information you need to know if you’re dipping lower or jumping higher.
For those with diabetes, the ability to monitor your glucose levels without multiple daily finger pricks – is truly life changing. If you are living with diabetes, I encourage you to evaluate your health practices to better understand the changes you can make to positively impact your health, as well as your overall lifestyle.

*THE FREESTYLE LIBRE FLASH GLUCOSE MONITORING SYSTEM AND LIBRELINK APP (“APP”), WHEN USED WITH THE FREESTYLE LIBRE SENSOR, IS INDICATED FOR MEASURING INTERSTITIAL FLUID GLUCOSE LEVELS IN ADULTS AGED 18 YEARS AND OLDER WITH DIABETES MELLITUS. IF YOU ARE USING THE FREESTYLE LIBRELINK APP, YOU MUST ALSO HAVE ACCESS TO A BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING SYSTEM AS THE APP DOES NOT PROVIDE ONE. ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW THE LABEL/INSERT FOR DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS AND INDICATION OF USE.
A finger prick test using a blood glucose meter is required during times of rapidly changing glucose levels when interstitial fluid glucose levels may not accurately reflect blood glucose levels or if hypoglycemia or impending hypoglycemia is reported by the system or when symptoms do not match the System readings.
For a complete glycemic picture, scan once every 8 hours.
The FreeStyle LibreLink app is compatible with Near-Field Communication (NFC) – enabled phones running Android OS 5.0 or higher and with iPhone 7 and higher running iOS 11 or higher.
