Summer may soon be officially drawing to a close, but that doesn’t mean vacations are over! Whether for a two-week vacation or several weekend getaways, the fall of the year is the perfect time for travel. Many domestic hotels and attractions are not as busy, often you can get off-season rates, you avoid the crowds and save lots of money. You can then use the money you saved towards a winter getaway to somewhere warm!

Before you get carried away with making reservations or booking your flight south, keep in mind that vacations are notorious for health slipups. Take note of these common vacation health mistakes and how to bounce back in time to enjoy your vacation.

Vacation Slipup Solutions

Slipup 1: Throwing your regular diet out the window
Nothing feels better than heading off on vacation, however, breaking your routine can affect your eating habits. While it’s fun to indulge or try new foods, it can be harder to manage a healthy diet, which can lead to dehydration or a lack of fiber. Even just a change in schedule can lead to uncomfortable changes in your bathroom routine.

Solution: Stay hydrated by carrying around a refillable water bottle and doing a little research on the restaurants you visit. To be pro-active and prepared in the case you do end up suffering from a bout of occasional constipation, pack a laxative you trust. RestoraLAX® NeatPAX™ Travel Size Packets comes in pre-measured, single-doses, so you can take one dose per day anytime, anywhere. You’ll be able to restore your body’s natural rhythm and get back into the vacation rhythm in no time!

Slipup 2: Walking around in bare feet
Is there anything more freeing than wriggling your toes in the pool? Unfortunately, walking in bare feet around the pool or in a public shower can have you coming into contact with more than you bargained for, like common warts or athlete’s foot.

Solution: Don’t forget your sandals as an easy compromise to going to barefoot. While not necessarily a threat to your health, these foot conditions can still cause unsightly marks and will have you covering up with more than just sandals. Get back to the pool pronto with these effective over the counter treatments:
– Try a wart remover with salicylic acid. Dr. Scholl’s® Clear Away® Wart Remover with DURAGEL™ Technology is thin, flexible and nearly invisible. The cushioning cover also stays on for multiple days to ensure the wart is effectively removed.
– Try a spray powder for relief of athlete’s foot. Tinactin® Aerosol Powder gives you quick relief from symptoms like itching, burning and cracked skin, and is easy to apply. It cures athlete’s foot and prevents it from coming back, when used as directed.

Slipup 3: You overdid it and your muscles are paying the price
Vacations are a fantastic time to try something new! Learning to water ski can be so thrilling in the moment that you might push yourself too far, and cause pain and soreness the next day. This is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

Solution: The best way to deal with DOMS is to prevent it altogether by knowing your limits. Always stretch or warm up before physical activity and ease slowly into any new activity. If you’re feeling sore, its best to give your body some time to rest. Lay off the extreme sports and stick to light exercise until you’re feeling ready to take on the next challenge.

Slipup 4: Your Airbnb doesn’t agree with your allergies
Even if you’ve diligently researched your hotel or rental property, you can’t always know if your accommodations will come fully stocked with allergens like dust mites or indoor mold. If you are an allergy sufferer, unexpected surroundings can have your allergy symptoms flaring.

Solution: Make sure you pack a multi-symptom allergy medication in your travel health kit so you’re ready for an allergy attack. Try a non-drowsy pill so that you can enjoy your vacation. AERIUS® is an antihistamine that delivers multi-symptom allergy relief for 24 hours. AERIUS relieves 15 allergy symptoms from plants (trees, grass, pollen and ragweed) or animal dander, dust mites, or mold, indoors or outdoors.

I don’t know about you, but in the past I had experienced three out of these four slipups, but no more! Now, when we travel, be it overnight or an extended stay, I always try to avoid these slipups but if a health situation arises…I have the solution packed in my suitcase.

What vacation slipup have you experienced?

How are you preparing to avoid common health mistakes on your next trip?

It’s a pain to remember, but worth not picking up unwanted “visitors”.

With vacation time still to come, I try to keep a supply of “meds” on hand. One thing I am never without is Aerius….for me it is a ” Don’t -leave-home-without-it” item. Great tips re sandals!

These are some excellent tips. Though we love to vacation everything gets out of whack when we travel. We need to get back to routines, eating properly etc… The struggle is real when we get back.

I think these are great tips. At the end of the day, if you are on vacation I think you should keep in mind you are there to have a good time and if you eat a piece of cake or try the local fare it isn’t the end of the world. Just keep up the exercise, water and pick one indulgent meal – not all 3!
