What Type of a Person Could Horribly Abuse a Tiny Kitten? {With an Update}

What type of a person could abuse a tiny little kitten that weighs less than 4 pounds?

  •  Is it a power trip? Yes, you must be very strong and powerful to beat a kitten, how does that make you feel?!
  • Is it a control issue? Yes, you are the boss when you kick a little cat or kitten, how does that make you feel?!
  •  Is it just pure hatred?  Yes, you think you are a superior person when you kick, throw and beat a tiny defenseless cat or kitten, how does that make you feel?!

These, and many others, are questions I have been mulling over in my head and asking myself a lot these last few days.  You see, our family has recently adopted a tiny cat that had been the victim of this type of viciousness.

This is Harper, she weighs less than 4 pounds, she is emaciated, panic-stricken, has a broken tooth, a scar on her head, a scar on her neck, and a scar on her back and a couple round scars that could very well have been cigarette burns!  She is terrified of boots and brooms, screamed {and I do mean screamed} when we tried to pet her tail, and was found with another cat, in a duct taped plastic container in the woods.

harper

It sickens me and I cannot even begin to fathom this type of cruelty; how could anyone possibly treat another living creature, let alone a little cat, in such a brutal manner.

I cannot say enough good things about the CA-R-MA organization in general, and Harper’s foster mom, Kailie, specifically.  These kind and caring people and the hikers who found the two kittens, rescued these totally innocent creatures from a painful death.

Cat Rescue Maritimes {CA-R-MA} started as a small group of three dedicated people that got together for the first time in 2005 in the attempt to save one little cat. Since then, they have continued their work and grown into a registered Charity with chapters in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

All I can say is thank God for these people, they have a special place in heaven!  And to the person/people who abused these cats and anyone else who thinks mistreating innocent animals is OK, hopefully, there is also a special place for you!

“Saving the life of one animal may not change the world, but the world will surely change for that one animal.”

My intent in sharing this story is to bring awareness to the horrible problem of animal abuse and to the organizations that reach out and rescue these poor defenseless creatures!

UPDATE – May 11, 2013:  Harper seems to be settling in well, she has attached herself to our daughter and rarely leaves her side.  She has a great appetite and seems to be gaining weight.  She rarely “cries” now and just meows softly when she wants something. She is getting along well with our other kitty, Kazzy and follows (and chases!) her around the house.  She loves to be petted, kissed, cuddled and have her neck scratched, to sit in the screened window or patio door watching the birds,  playing with her little toy mouse and chasing little balls.  She is so sweet and we are all totally in love with her.  We are spoiling her rotten and she will never again have to worry about being abused, she is safe now in her forever home!

  1. I don’t get it either. Harming any animal…it’s sick. Humans are a repugnant race.

  2. I agree, people who adopt and care for rescue animals are very special.

  3. OMG!! poor kitty! Her story brought tears to my eyes! I never understood how someone can be so cruel! Thank goodness for rescue operations like CARMA

  4. I’m crying reading this. I am one of those who cannot understand harm towards innocent animals these size who cannot defend themselves. It hurts me right to the core, I am lucky enough to know many volunteers for local animal shelters and rescues and so thankful there are organizations that can help these little guys.

    • I know Ashleigh, I cannot even begin to understand why or how anyone could do this. All I can say is thank goodness for the organizations and the volunteers within them, who dedicate themselves to rescuing these totally innocent little creatures!

  5. I can’t for the life of me understand it either. It’s just heartwrenching.

  6. oh my gosh, that’s awful. :(

  7. I am so sorry your new kitten is in so much pain. She is blessed to have your family to love her. Some people put no thoughts behind their actions and it is heart breaking when a living animal or person is caught on the end.

    • She is doing much better now Tammy, but will always be scarred, both physically and emotionally be this horrific experience. Thank you for your kind words!

  8. Wow! All I can say is wow! I just recently lost my kitty, after 21 years of loving him, him loving me and I cannot even describe the rage I’m feeling reading this and that horrible people would even contemplate hurting an animal. It’s disgusting! Thank you so much for bringing this article to our attention, and this great cause to a voice.

    • Jodi we too just lost our cat of 21 years (she was my husband’s before she was “ours”) and it is next to impossible to understand the cruelty in some people’s hearts.

      • I am so sorry for your loss our pet’s are a part of our family and losing them is heartbreaking. Our kitty Emma, died almost a year ago she was 15, and I still miss her every day, she was a very special part of our family!
Like you, I cannot begin to fathom this horrific behavior!

    • I am so sorry for your loss Jodi, our pet’s very quickly become a part of our family and losing them is heartbreaking. Our kitty Emma, died almost a year ago she was 15) and I still get tears in my eyes and a heavy feeling in my chest whenever I think of her, she was a very special part of our family!
Like you I cannot even begin to comprehend this horrific behavior…it is totally disgusting and the people who do this are the lowest of the lows!
Thank you for your kind words Jodi.

  9. Sugar & Spice & All Things ? Nice says

I would love to have a few minutes alone with the type of person who would abuse anyone or anything that should be cared for. I agree with Ashleigh, I had tears in my eyes when you told us about Harper Leigh. She is very fortunate to have such a loving family to care for her now. She already seems so happy.

    • Pat, animal abuse it is totally beyond my and most people’s comprehension…as I said above, I hope there is also a “special place” for these abusers!

  10. Oh my goodness, there are some sick people in this world :( As everyone else has said, this kitten is lucky to have you and your family to care for it!

  11. Good for you for adopting this little kitten. It will be a tough go but so worth it in the end. My cat Atwood (who now has passed) was abused and when I got him from the Humane Society he had a broken nose and numerous cuts. He had nose problems his whole life and snored when he slept. He turned into a loving wonderful pet. He was amazing.
Lucky kitten to have you in his life now.

    • Kerri, I am sorry about Atwood, our pets quickly become part of the family and when they die we miss them terribly. I am so happy you rescued Atwood and gave him the loving home he deserved. As I am sure you understand, we are the lucky ones to have little Harper in our lives, she has already started to settle in and we all love her so much!

  12. So completely heartbreaking to think that there are sick people out there that could possibly do that to such a helpless poor animal! I don’t understand it and I am SO thankful that she is now with you!! Poor thing!

    • Brandi, I think abuse such as this is totally beyond the comprehension of most people. We are all so thrilled to have her with us and we are totally in love with her!

  13. I wish I could say I was shocked by this story, but sadly….this kind of sick behavior is nothing new …. Many of my kitty cats are ones I rescued from situations & I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I have cried wondering why in the world people do such sick and evil things. The majority are sociopaths who have no empathy and an ice-cold heart. And in the end ….. those that harm will be punished for eternity!

    • I know Kristen, it is so disturbing that such unthinkable behavior occurs on a daily basis, like you and most people, this makes me feel sick. I agree with you and hopefully, this type of cruelty will not go unpunished.

  14. Maegan Morin says

Ugh that makes me sick to my stomach. I just dont understand what is wrong in someones brain to make them do things like that.

  15. The scary thing is is that if they will do it to animals, they’ll do it to people too like hurting kids that can’t fight back. I’m so glad you’ve taken on the task of reabilitating this kitten. Do you have any other pets to help it adjust quicker? We got a kitten, not an abused one as such, but it didn’t like human touch and was scared of getting hit for being on the furniture. We think the people that she lived with were not very tolerant and they had a dangerous dog as well, so our kitten was often afraid. Now the kitten comes to us for affection and is comfortable on the couch or sofa chairs, but she will only cuddle with our other kitten and allows our youngest child, Amanda, to cuddle with her too. And, it has learned that our outdoor dog is friendly and so she’s not so fearful of him anymore either. I hope yours will be able to put his demons behind him and enjoy the safety and love of your home soon.

    • Oh Christina, your poor kitty, why do people who don’t love and make an effort to try to understand an animal have them as pets? I am so happy that she found a loving and safe environment in your home. Thanks for your comments too, it is good to hear that your kitty is adjusting well and gives me hope that ours will too. We do have another cat who is very gentle and kind, hopefully someday soon they will cuddle up together too!

  16. Harper is a very lucky kitty to be living with you now. It makes me very angry to know that people could be that cruel to a tiny animal. Harper Leigh is a beautiful kitty. She loves being near people and even greeted me warmly when I came to visit. Thank God for CA-R-MA. I’ve seen them many times at the Queen Square Market over the Summer.

    • Kathy, I cannot for the life of me understand animal cruelty, why do people even have these animals if they are not going to treat them with the kindness and respect they deserve. They are totally innocent and deserve to be treated well. Harper is beautiful and we are all totally in love with her and I cannot say enough good things about CA-R-MA and the volunteers, they are very, very special people!

  17. Big hugs to you for taking the sweet thing in. I hope her life is a long and happy one now.

Those that love animals are just better people because of it,we have 3 cats and 3 dogs. All rescues with their own issues and fears from their previous lives. They give me so much in terms of love, trust and joy .

    • Huge kudos to you and your family for rescuing these animals, I wish there were more people in the world like you Michelle! And I agree with you completely, they give us so much and ask for very little in return!

  19. HEIDI C. says

I had tears in my eyes reading this post! Just awful! I had not heard of this organization even though I live in NB. I am definitely going to check them out!

    • I know Heidi, it is very disturbing to read, These innocent animals do not deserve to be treated this way and it is totally incomprehensible to most of us!
CA-R-MA is an amazing organization of volunteers and I cannot say enough good things about them!

  20. I’m glad the kitten found a new home. Years ago, a friend of mine had two black cats. Stupid, superstitious people would often try to hurt her cats when they’d cross their path. That might be the type of person who would do this sort of thing.

  21. This brought tears to my eyes, too. You have a special place in heaven, too. I would be loving on that little sweet pea every minute!

    • Thank you Kelly, and we are…she is so sweet and we are trying to give her lots and lots of love and attention, all the food she wants and absolutely no stress! She really is so adorable and loving and we think of her as our special gift!

  22. Aww :) I am so glad she is settling in. We adopted a cat from the Humane Society- she was quite beautiful with green eyes. She did slowly come round to us and the realization we meant no harm. Poor girl ending up getting very sick and we could not make her better. We felt so bad! I don’t understand the cruelty of humans-whether to people or animals. It is so sad. Animals are a true gift.

  23. This stuff truly makes me sick, and sad. I can’t imagine it. I mean our cats our spoiled rotten, and we recently paid an insane amount to get dental surgery on our cat, and I felt horrible that we hadn’t noticed it until then. I was sick to my stomach and sobbing at the thought of not spending more than we spent on our last vehicle to save our cat. I am glad you have this kitty now, and it will have a good life.

Thanks for linking up to my comment love! You can readd now if you would like!

    • I know it is so sad to think how evil some people are. I hear you with the vet bills; we had this little one at the vet this week, she had to spend two nights for some testing related to a bowel issue. She is now on a special diet and medications every 12 hours…but, that’s what you do when you take on the responsibility of a pet.
