Tip # 35 Lower your thermostat by 4-5 degrees Celsius With the colder winter months now upon us, our energy consumption starts to rise dramatically.  You can save energy if you: Lower your thermostat by 4-5 degrees Celsius (7-9 degrees Fahrenheit) while you're sleeping at night and when no one is at home. Install a programmable thermostat.  You can save 2% on your heating bill for every degree Celsius you turn down your thermostat. Monica … [Read more...]

"noreply-comment@blogger.com"

When I receive an e-mail comment on a non-giveaway post I always try to respond, even if it's just to say "thanks".  However, of late I have been noticing something I rarely encountered previously.  When I click reply, many e-mails now have the "noreply-comment@blogger.com", which makes it difficult to correspond and interact with many fellow bloggers.I believe this is just an issue with "Blogger" blogs and if you want fellow bloggers to be able to respond to your e-mails you … [Read more...]

# 34 Try to cook more efficiently When cooking in a pot, maximize efficiency by always using a lid. You can also turn off the oven several minutes before the cooking is done as the oven will retain the heat (I wouldn't do this with sensitive baking) When using your oven to cook a roast, a chicken, meatloaf etc. save turning on the cook top elements by also using the heat already in the oven to bake potatoes and some vegetables In the cooler months, when I finish with the oven … [Read more...]

Even I have my limits!!

Anyone who knows me, even a little, will attest to how much I love my cats.  They run our household and are way beyond spoiled. However, even I have my limits, especially when it comes to my coffee.  I'm very protective of my coffee and drink several cups a day! Well, today I was puttering around the house and catching up on some weekly chores.  I sat my coffee on the island while I went down to put on a load of laundry, came back up stairs and...you guessed it...my 12 year old … [Read more...]

Tip # 33Use Compact Fluorescent Light BulbsThe existing light bulb we are used to is technology from over 100 years ago. It is inefficient and produces heat. A common energy saving tip is to use a Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL).These bulbs cost more to purchase, they save you money over the life of the bulb. They last much longer than a traditional incandescent bulb, run cooler, and use almost 80% less electricity. About 18 months ago we replaced the majority of our old … [Read more...]
